Zubaidi, the silver pomfret, is a cool-water fish, and its season does not switch on in a single day. It builds from late autumn through the cold months, tightening with every cold front that pushes water temperatures down. This guide walks the season month by month, explains how a cold northerly concentrates the fish, and covers the best hours, tide phase, depth, bottom type and live bait.

How Cold Water Concentrates Zubaidi

The rule is simple: Zubaidi follow the cold. As water temperature drops, fish move in from deeper water toward the coast and settle over the bottom to feed. Through summer they sit far out and feed lightly. Once the seasonal winds calm and the water clears, marks that were empty in August start showing fish. When a mark moves, that is your cue to test depth and bottom.

Month by Month, Late Autumn to Late Winter

• October — water still warm; first faint signs after the seasonal winds die, deeper marks at night.
• November — the season opens; fish push into 15 to 25 metres and fresh shrimp is the first-choice bait.
• December — water cools further, average size improves, and short sessions tight to the bottom produce.
• January — coldest water of the year and the best window for bigger fish, once the sea settles after a northerly.
• February — numbers still hold, but the weather swings hard, so keep your day flexible.
• March — fish remain but thin out as the water warms; watch the first move back to deeper ground.

Cold Fronts and Why They Matter

A cold front is the trigger. After a strong, cold northerly, surface water cools and mixes, and the fish drop close to the bottom. Your best days usually come a day or two after the wind eases, when the water clears and the current steadies. Before that the sea is stirred and the fish unsettled. Check sea state before you launch.

Best Time of Day and Tide Phase

Zubaidi feed better at night. Your strongest window runs from late afternoon to around midnight, with a second bite just before sunrise. On tide, the fish feed most at the start of the flood and at high slack, and again as the ebb begins. On a mark you trust, sit an hour before the tide turns and stay put. Do not strike at the first tap.

Depth and Bottom Type

Early in the season you are usually fishing 15 metres and deeper. At the heart of the season fish push shallower, often 10 to 20 metres, over sand and mud. Soft, mixed ground is best, because Zubaidi nibble and take the bait softly rather than chasing it. Use a light line and just enough weight to hold bottom without dragging.

Live Bait, Patience and Etiquette

• Bait — live shrimp or prawn, the local live bait known as khathaq, with small fish strips as backup.
• Patience — lift only when the rod loads, not on the first touch.
• Etiquette — do not anchor over another boat or set gear, keep your distance, and leave the mark clean.
