Kuwait's Rainy Season: When and How

Our rainy window runs roughly November to March. Most days are light drizzle that changes nothing, but a few heavy "marta" days drop a lot of water fast and flood streets and underpasses. Those are the days that matter before any sea trip.

What Rain Does to the Sea

Rain runs off streets and yards straight into Kuwait Bay, carrying dirt, rubbish and oil. The result is clouded water and sharply reduced underwater visibility: the sea turns milky and dirty for a day or two after a heavy fall, then clears gradually.

Dry Wadis: The Winter Trap

Al-Rawdatain, Umm Al-Haiman and the dry valleys around Jahra turn from harmless ground into dangerous flash floods in minutes. Never cross a dry wadi during or right after rain, and never park at the wadi edge — mud grips a vehicle and floods arrive with no warning.

Visibility drops and underpasses fill up fast — take the safe road and wait until the water drains.

Thunder, Squalls and the Shamal

Winter here means the shamal — strong wind arriving with or right after rain. Thunderstorms and squalls catch small boats off guard, and the hardest moments usually happen while running back to port. The shamal builds short, steep chop quickly. Lightning is a separate risk on an unprotected small boat, so stay clear of masts, rails and metal gear once you hear thunder.

Rain-Day Safety Checklist

• Check the rain radar and sea state before every trip — never judge from the sky at home.
• Watch how much rain fell overnight; after a heavy fall, postpone the trip a full day.
• Wear a waterproof jacket and pack a dry bag for phone, documents and spare clothes.
• Work out the tide properly — high water hides submerged rocks and ledges near shore.
• If you hear thunder or see dark cumulus building, head for port immediately.
• Don't take a small boat out during a marine warning or a hard shamal.

When Fishing Picks Up After Rain

Fishing shuts down during the rain itself, because murky, disturbed water pushes fish off the shallows. It picks up the day after, and often the second day is better still, as the water clears and fish move back to the edges. The best timing is the start of the incoming tide with clean new water, when small life washes out of the creeks and bigger fish follow it in.
