Winter changes where fish hold in Kuwait, and it changes when they feed. If you keep working your summer spots in January, you will work harder for less.
The season runs roughly November to March, and the water cools month by month rather than all at once.
Early season is different from mid-season. In November and December the temperature is falling but the fish have not fully adjusted, while by January and February the pattern has settled and the fish sit deeper and slower.
When the water cools, fish cut down on movement, leave the shallow flats that held them in summer, and settle in calmer, more stable water.
Practical rule of thumb: fish deeper in winter than you do in summer. A general 15 to 30 m range is a useful guide, not a fixed number, and it moves with the area and the day.
Deeper water and channel edges come first, especially where the depth changes sharply or a soft current keeps bait moving.
Around the Shuwaikh and Shuaiba port areas, the edges of Kuwait Bay, and the northern coast near Jahra, early-season signs show up reliably and often sooner than elsewhere.
In the south near Fahaheel and the islands, depth arrives faster and you can find room with less traffic.
Do not lock onto one mark. Keep two or three spots between 15 and 30 m, work them in turn, and record the result for each one.
Watch the bottom too. Any change in depth or ground type is a candidate worth a drop, because winter fish hug structure far more than they do in summer.
Zubaidi, sobaity, shaeri and hamour all respond directly to water temperature.
As the water cools, zubaidi move closer to sandy and muddy bottoms and sit low in the water column, while hamour slow down and need a bait that passes close to them rather than far off.
Shaeri and sobaity follow tide movement more closely in winter than in summer, which makes timing as important as location.
Bait works slower as well. Use lighter weight and a calmer action, and let the bait sit longer on the mark instead of running past it.
Use the Shuwaikh and Shuaiba tide times in B7R, because an hour of difference in the tide moves where the fish sit.
If the day you picked turns into a hard blow, postpone it. A rushed trip does not produce fish, it produces problems.
Winter brings rain and a cold north wind, and wind chill on the water is far harsher than it feels on land.
Check the forecast before you leave, take clothing that cuts wind and rain, and settle the run home before you launch.
Tell someone ashore where you are going and when you expect to be back, and leave with a charged phone.
