When Should You Change Your Fishing Line? Signs and Fixes

B7R Blog

The Cheapest Part of Your Tackle Is the Line

Most fish are lost to old line, not to a bad hook. Line spends its life in salt water, under Kuwait's sun, jammed on a spool, and often stored in a hot locker or car through the summer. It loses strength quietly and lets go on the one fish that mattered. A five minute inspection costs nothing compared with losing a good fish.

Line also dies in storage. Keep spare spools in a closed bag out of direct sun, not on the console and never in a car boot in August. Log the date every time you respool in B7R next to your catches; a season later that record tells you which line survives Kuwait's summer and which one quietly gave up.

What a Failing Line Looks Like

Run the first few metres between your fingers, almost blind. Roughness, a lump, or a flaky patch means abrasion. Faded or chalky colour means UV has eaten the outer layer. Coils that keep their shape and sharp kinks are weak points you can feel before you can see them. Mono also loses strength from heat alone, so a spool that sat in a hot cabin all summer may test far below its printed rating even if it looks fine.

How Long Should Line Last?

The Pull Test

Tie the line to something solid and pull steadily, not in a snap. Watch for a section that necks down, or a spot that starts to part. Tie a single knot and load it. If it breaks under a pull you would not call hard, cut back past the damage or respool. If it fails twice at roughly the same distance from the end, cutting is a waste of time.

Cut Back or Respool

Cut the last two or three metres when the damage is only at the tip; that solves most cases after a snag or a good fish. Respool when the abrasion is spread out, when you have lost more than a quarter of the spool, or when the line has already spent two summers in the sun. Braid needs to go on tight and even, or it will dig into itself under load. And do not start a big trip on line you have not tested; check it the day before, not at the ramp.
