Trip Timing Summer vs Winter: A Comparison Table

B7R Blog

Summer and winter trips in Kuwait are not the same sport with different clothes. Wind, water temperature, tide timing, target species and even the hour you leave the dock all move with the season. A plan that works in July will burn fuel for nothing in January.

Summer: dawn or nothing

From June to September the air is hot and the water is bathed warm, so fish push into deeper ground or feed in low light. The two usable windows are the hour before sunrise and the last hour before sunset. Midday belongs to running home, not to fishing.

Watch for afternoon sarayat that rebuild the wind in minutes, and the bwarikh that trail them, leaving the surface flat and thick with heat.

Fuel is part of the calculation too. A summer run out to Kubbar in the heat is a long push in both directions, while the same water in December feels like half the distance.

Winter: a much longer day

From November to March the water cools and the big fish come shallow. Zubaidi and large hamour are the targets, and you can fish through the middle of the day without boiling. Night tides open ground that summer never lets you reach. The trade-off is the shamal, heavier and more frequent in this season.

Cold mornings reward patience. Bait sits longer before it needs changing and the fish move less, so slow the presentation down instead of racing around all day.

Comparison table

FactorSummerWinter
Best hoursFirst light and last lightMost of the day, plus night tides
Water temperatureWarm, fish sit deepCool, fish come shallow
Dominant windAfternoon sarayat, bwarikhShamal, stronger and more frequent
Target speciesHamour on deep ground, maidZubaidi and big hamour
GroundsFantas, Doha, Failaka edgesKubbar, deeper reefs, west Shuwaiba
Set-upLight line, fast sink, more water onboardHeavier line, slow baits
Main riskHeat and sudden sarayatShamal swell, cold, short days

Use the table as a starting point and shift the hours for your own ground, because the tide at west Shuwaiba runs a good half hour behind Fantas.

Quick tips for each season

Plan the season inside the B7R app

The B7R app covers both seasons in one place: tide tables for Shuwaikh and Shuaiba, sea state and weather readouts, the fish guide, seasons info, navigation tools, a catch log and an SOS button. Check it the night before and again at the boat.

The B7R app is free on Google Play. Set your next trip up properly and stop guessing: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.q8dm.b7r
