Trevally โ known locally as trabany or jash โ is one of the most rewarding fish to target from a boat in Kuwait. It hits hard, runs fast, and punishes anyone who ignores the tide. The trick is to think like the fish: where is the food, where is the current, and where is the cover.
Trevally rarely sit over open, featureless sand. They hold on structure and on the edges between shallow and deeper water. Look for:
Watch your sounder for any sudden change in depth or a clear hard line. Mark the spot in the B7R app as a waypoint โ a log of your marks teaches you more than any single trip.
The first rule with trevally is simple: moving water beats still water. The best windows sit around the tide movement, when current pushes bait and stirs the bottom. The last of the ebb and the first of the flood are often the strongest.
Dawn and late afternoon outperform the middle of the day. Early morning catches the feeding shift, and after the sun drops the fish feed again before dark. In shallow water, light and shadow matter โ trevally use low light to move onto the flats.
A medium setup covers most situations:
Live bait is excellent, and trevally rarely refuse a small fish that moves. Lures and jigs let you cover more water and find the school faster. The retrieve is simple: a short lift, then a pause. Most bites come on the pause, so wait until you feel real weight before setting the hook.
When you find a group, anchor over the mark and fish vertically, or drift with the wind and use small motor corrections to stay on the line. Trevally strike hard, so let the fish take line before lifting. Land it, unhook it quickly, and handle it with wet hands.
Then get it on ice fast โ bleed and ice it to protect the quality of the flesh. Always respect closed seasons and minimum sizes, and check the official rules rather than relying on word of mouth.
Over time you will notice how much a catch log changes your results. The B7R app gives you tide times for Shuwaikh and Shuaiba so you know when the water will move, and its sea state and fish guide help you plan before you leave.
