Trailer Maintenance Before the Season: A Checklist

The trailer is the part most boat owners forget. When it fails, it does not just cost you a fishing day — it stops you on the highway in mid-summer heat. Give it two hours before the season starts. It is far cheaper than a recovery truck or a boat stuck in the workshop.

1. Tires and Pressure

Trailer tires stand in the sun for months, which is the hardest thing you can do to rubber. Look for sidewall cracks and uneven wear, and check pressure cold. Do not trust a visual check. A tire blowing at 120 km/h while towing a boat does not stop politely, and the spare needs the same inspection.

2. Wheel Bearings

Jack the wheel up and spin it. If you hear rumbling, feel play, or find heat after a short run, the bearings want replacing or repacking. Salt water is the number one killer of Kuwaiti trailer bearings. Keep the rubber cap intact and grease before and after the season.

3. Lights and Wiring

Connect the trailer and test everything: tail lights, brake lights, indicators, plate light. Most wiring faults are salt or moisture in the plug. Clean the contacts, spray them with a protective coat, and make sure the cable is not rubbing on the frame.

4. Brakes and Winch

If the trailer is braked, test on a gentle slope rather than the road. The winch strap ages in the sun and can snap without warning — run it through your hands and look for fraying, fading and a sound hook.

5. Chain and Coupler

• The crossed safety chain should be short enough to catch the trailer.
• The clip is straight and not bent open.
• The coupler latches firmly on the ball with no play.
• The locking pin is present and free of rust.

6. Rust and Frame

A galvanised trailer rusts from inside the tube first. Tap the frame with a screwdriver handle: a dull or soft sound, or paint bubbling, means internal rust. Clean and paint the cross members, especially above the axle and around the welds.

7. Do a Short Test Run

Do not start the season with a long tow. Twenty kilometres empty or with a light load reveals heat, vibration, lights and brakes before you commit to a full trip. Then rinse with fresh water and grease.
