Local Tide Table vs Tide App: Which to Trust?

B7R Blog

It happens often: you reach the harbour, the water looks nothing like the number on your phone, and the printed table on the wall says something different again. A local tide table and a phone tide app rarely agree to the minute. The honest answer is that both can be right, because they measure and publish in different ways. The question is not which one is perfect, but which one suits the moment you are in.

Why the Table and the App Disagree

A published table is usually tied to one reference port and its times are rounded to the nearest hour. A tide app carries the same predictions but may anchor them to a different point, a different datum, or a secondary-port offset. The usual culprits are:

Rounding, Datum and the Clock

A table that rounds to the hour can be off by up to thirty minutes in either direction, and that matters when a channel is drying or a slipway is only usable near the top of the tide. Datum is the other silent difference: two sources can quote the same event a metre apart simply because their zero line is not the same. And the clock is the easiest trap of all: a table printed in one time zone and an app set to another will disagree by exactly an hour, every single day, which is easy to spot once you look for a whole-hour gap.

How to Test Your App Against Your Port

Run a one-week trial. Each day, note the high or low time the B7R app gives, then check where the water actually sits against a fixed mark such as a slipway, a jetty post or a rock you know. Compare that with the official table for the harbour, and do it in the same spot each day so the comparison stays fair. After about seven days a pattern appears: if the app runs a steady number of minutes early or late, that is a correction you can plan around. If it swings randomly on spring-tide days, wind is usually doing the talking, not the prediction.

The Best Routine: Use Both

Treat the app as your planning tool. The B7R app gives tide times for Shuwaikh and Shuaiba ports, so you can look a week ahead while you plan at home. Treat the table and your own eyes at the water as confirmation on the day. Used together, they beat either one alone.
