Testing Tide App Accuracy: Choosing One You Can Trust

Kuwait Bay is shallow, and its water moves more than most boaters expect. Between high and low tide the level swings roughly 2 to 4 metres depending on the moon and the wind. That swing decides whether you can float off a mooring at Shuwaikh, whether the flats near Doha and Fahaheel hold enough depth, and when the fish start feeding on the moving water.

Test the app on the water, not the store rating

Star ratings say nothing about local accuracy. Test it yourself:

• Compare it with a paper tide table for Shuwaikh and Shuaiba, the kind sold in tackle and marine supply shops along the coast.
• Follow it for three days in a row, not one. An app that matches on a calm day can drift badly on a spring tide.
• Stand at a fixed point, such as the slipway at Shuwaikh or the shore at Fahaheel, and check where the water actually sits at the high or low the app predicts.
• Test both ports separately. Shuwaikh and Shuaiba sit close together but their times are not always identical, so a decent app shows them as two stations, not one.

Wind bends the prediction

A strong northwest shamal pushes water out of the Bay and holds the level lower than any table says. Southeasterly winds do the reverse and pile water against the shore. When that happens a prediction can be technically right and still wrong for what you see. If the wind has blown hard for two days, trust your eyes over the screen.

The four daily states, and spring versus neap

Every tide day has four moments: high, low, and two slack points between them where the water stops. Fish feed hardest while it is moving. Spring tides around the full and new moon run bigger and stronger, neap tides gentler. In Kuwait Bay the spring range opens out noticeably wider, which matters when your approach is shallow.

Before you commit to one, check that it gives you times calculated from Kuwaiti stations rather than distant ones, in Kuwait local time with no offset to work out yourself, the moon phase so you can see spring and neap at a glance, and a display simple enough to read from a boat.
