Strange Marine Creatures in the Gulf

B7R Blog

The Arabian Gulf is not a dull sea. Kuwaiti waters hold creatures that surprise even seasoned sailors: fish that inflate, stingers that ride in with the summer heat, animals buried in sand. Here is where you meet them and what to do if one gets you.

Jellyfish (Al Zumurrud): The Summer Blob

When the heat builds and the wind shifts, jellyfish โ€” locally Al Zumurrud โ€” arrive in force on Kuwait's beaches. The sting comes from tiny cells on their arms, and reactions range from a sharp burn to a rash lasting days.

Pufferfish (Al Qarad): The One That Inflates

The pufferfish, locally Al Qarad, blows into a spiky ball when alarmed: toxic flesh, painful spines. Never grab one bare-handed. If a spine goes into your hand, remove it carefully, clean the wound, and if swelling or breathing trouble follows, call 112.

Stonefish: Worse Than It Looks

The stonefish sits dead still on sand and rock, disguised as a lump, and delivers venom through dorsal spines that ranks among the worst in the sea. It never attacks โ€” it defends. The danger is that you never see it, so never walk blind on soft bottom.

Electric Ray (Al Raad): Live Current

The electric ray buries itself, then fires a shock strong enough to numb your hand or leg if you step on it. The jolt usually stops at pain and tingling, so prevention is everything: water shoes.

Flatfish, Sea Cucumber, Starfish, Mantis Shrimp

Flatfish start life with an eye on each side, then one migrates so the fish can lie flat on the seabed. The sea cucumber looks like a rubbery vegetable on the bottom, starfish creep over rock and seagrass, and the mantis shrimp throws a punch you can hear from the surface. All odd, none dangerous โ€” watch, photograph, leave them.

Sea Snakes: Rare, Still Serious

You occasionally see them at the surface. Never try to catch or handle one. If someone is bitten, get out of the water, keep the limb still, and get medical help fast.

Rules That Cover Most Cases

Before you head out, check sea state, marine weather and tide times for Shuaiba and Shuaikh ports in the B7R app โ€” small planning kills most bad surprises. The app is in its launch phase and improving with user feedback.

If something serious happens on the water โ€” a bad sting, a venomous spine, someone who needs help โ€” use the SOS button in the app or call 112. Do not wait until you are back at the marina.

Respect the Marine Life

Strange creatures are not there to scare you; they are part of what keeps the Gulf alive. Take only what you need, never kill something just because you saw it, and leave the spot cleaner than you found it.
