Seaside camping in Kuwait is very much a cool-season affair. From roughly October to spring, the heat drops and the water calms, and the beaches turn into one long weekend campsite. Camping on the beach is not the same as camping in the desert โ it has its own rules. The two that matter most are where you pitch and when you go.
Khiran, in the far south, is the classic seaside camping destination in Kuwait. Its sheltered lagoons and shallow, calm water are why so many families return there season after season. Along the same southern coastline you will find long open beaches, and in places the chalet and beachfront zones that many use as a base for a beach weekend โ all public areas with their own atmosphere. Just remember that camping inland in the desert is a different activity with different rules; this guide is about pitching on the beach itself.
The golden rule of beach camping: pitch above the high-water mark, not beside it. Before you settle on a spot, find the tide line โ the dried seaweed and debris that mark the highest reach of recent tides โ and set up well beyond it. Tides in Kuwait can move a long way; a wide flat beach in the morning can shrink dramatically by the afternoon. Beach sand gives ordinary tent pegs nothing to grip, so bring long sand pegs or fill bags with sand as anchors and guy the tent out properly. Through the season the prevailing wind is from the north, so rig a windbreak on that side to keep sand out of your fire and food. Carry plenty of fresh water for drinking and cooking โ seawater is for swimming only. Kuwait's winter sun is still strong, so add a shade canopy; nights also get genuinely cold, so pack warm layers.
Keep any fire or barbecue well away from tents and anything flammable, on open sand, and drown the embers completely before you leave โ smouldering coals on a windy beach start fires. Take your rubbish home, and follow municipal regulations for public recreation areas, including permits where they apply. The beach is shared ground: leave it as clean as you found it, or cleaner.
