Sea fog is a real hazard in Kuwait's waters, especially in winter. When fog rolls in, visibility drops fast, and a routine fishing trip can turn dangerous in minutes. Knowing what causes it and how to react is the difference between a safe trip and an emergency.

What causes sea fog?

Sea fog forms when warm, humid air moves over cooler sea water. The warm air cools quickly, and its moisture condenses into tiny water droplets that hang in the air, cutting visibility to a few hundred meters or less.

It is most common near the coast and over open water. In Kuwait, fog is heavier along the shoreline and offshore areas, which makes it a serious concern for fishermen and boaters between December and March.

When does fog happen in Kuwait?

Kuwait sea fog typically appears in winter and early spring, mainly from December to March. The risk is highest in the early morning hours, before the sun has warmed the air enough to burn the fog off.

Coastal spots like Al-Ardah (العارض), Shuwaiba, and Umm Al-Naml see fog more often because they sit close to Gulf waters. If fog is thick onshore, expect it to be worse at sea.
