Sandstorms and Their Effect on the Sea

Sandstorms are part of life in Kuwait. From spring into summer, wind lifts dust off the desert and pushes it out to sea. A fine morning on land can be a different story on the bay.

For boaters and fishermen, a sandstorm is more than an inconvenience. It cuts visibility, shifts the wind, stirs the sea, and coats your boat in dust. Knowing what it does to the water helps you decide whether to head out.

What a sandstorm does to the sea

Dust does not stop at the shoreline. Wind carries sand and fine particles far out over the water, where they hang in the air and slowly settle on the surface. On calm days you will see a thin layer of dust floating on the sea; in heavy storms the sky turns yellow-brown and the horizon disappears.

The sea rarely turns violent from dust alone. What makes it rough is the strong northwesterly wind that arrives with the storm — it builds the chop, pushes swell into the bays, and makes anchorages uncomfortable.

Visibility and wind: the two biggest dangers

On land, a dusty sky still lets you see the road. At sea there are no roads — only buoys, markers, and other boats. In a sandstorm, visibility can drop to a few hundred meters in minutes. That is dangerously little time when you are navigating a busy harbor or crossing shipping lanes near Shuwaikh.

The shamal wind that brings the dust can pick up suddenly and blow hard for days. A flat sea in the morning can turn into short, steep waves within an hour, and small boats feel it first. Check the wind forecast and sea state in the B7R app before you launch — it updates through the day.

• Keep a safe distance from other vessels — they may not see you either.
• Slow down early; do not rely on spotting hazards at the last second.
• Trust your GPS and charts over your eyes when the horizon is gone.
• If visibility drops below the safe limit, head for the nearest harbor and wait it out.

Dust, engines, and electronics

Fine dust gets into everything. It settles on the deck, clogs air filters, and finds its way into engine intakes and electrical connections. After a dusty trip, wash the boat, rinse the engine bay, and wipe your electronics before moisture turns the dust into mud.

Salt and dust are a harsh combination for wiring and connectors. A quick rinse and a dry cover after the trip saves you from corrosion later.

Protect your eyes and lungs

Out on the water you cannot step inside to escape the dust. Wear wrap-around sunglasses and a light buff over your nose and mouth. If you have asthma or a breathing condition, a sandstorm day is a good day to stay ashore.

Keep water close — dusty air dries you out fast — and wash your face and eyes when you get back to land.

When to postpone the trip

There is no shame in staying on the dock. If the dust is thick and the wind is rising, the sea will still be there tomorrow. Postponing a trip is the cheapest decision you will make on a boat.
