Salinity and Water Temperature: How They Affect Fish in Kuwait

B7R Blog

In Kuwait's waters, two things decide more about your trip than any lure: salinity and water temperature. Together they set where fish sit, whether they feed, and at what depth you find them.

This is a practical breakdown of the real numbers and how to adjust your plan around them.

Gulf salinity: why the water is so salty

Salinity in the Arabian Gulf runs roughly 38 to 42 parts per thousand (ppt). Strong evaporation, very little rainfall, and few river inputs keep it there.

Local fish are adapted to that steady level, so the number itself is not the issue โ€” fast change is. Near a drain or river mouth, or after heavy rain, salinity dips briefly and some species back off while others feed harder.

Water temperature through the year

Surface water in Kuwait waters typically sits around 30-34 degrees C at the peak of summer and drops to roughly 15-18 degrees C in winter. That spread is enough to change feeding, depth, and location completely.

Heat does not spread evenly: layers

Temperature is not the same from surface to seabed. In summer a thermocline forms: warm water on top, a sharper drop below. That layer also limits oxygen exchange, so fish hold above or below it rather than crossing through.

Fish seek their thermal comfort zone โ€” the depth where the temperature suits them. In peak heat many species drop to cooler water, so working a hot shallow flat can produce nothing while the same area works after dark.

What it means on the water

In hot weather feeding happens in short windows: first light, after sunset, and around current changes. In cold weather it flips to midday, when the shallows have warmed. Same spot, opposite result, depending on season.

Salinity adds another variable. If a mark near a drain or river mouth behaves inconsistently, log the salinity and temperature so you can repeat the conditions that worked.

A simple routine that works

Before you leave, check water temperature and set your expected fish depth from it. The free B7R app on Google Play gives tide tables for Shuaiba and Shuwaikh ports plus sea state and wave conditions โ€” the first input that should shape your plan.

When you get back, log the trip in B7R's catch log: water temperature, depth, time, and result. After a few trips the pattern shows up and points you to the right depth instead of guesswork.

Bottom line

Salinity is a stable feature of our water (38-42 ppt) and temperature is the variable that drives everything. Watch both, adjust depth and hours to match, and you will feel the difference on the first trip.
