Reading Kuwait Tide Tables: A Practical Walkthrough

A tide table is the first thing to open before you head out. A monthly table gives you the time and height of every high and low tide for the whole month, yet plenty of anglers stare at it and lose the plot. It is not random numbers; it is your trip plan written in time order. The B7R app lays out tide data for Shuwaikh and Shuaiba ports clearly, but you still want to read the table yourself so the water never surprises you.

The Columns and What They Mean

Almost every monthly tide table uses the same columns, even when the layout differs:

• Date and day: one row per day. Check both carefully so you do not plan for the wrong date.
• High water time: the moment the water reaches its highest level in that cycle.
• Low water time: the moment it drops to its lowest level.
• Height: the water level in metres against a fixed reference point.
• Range: the gap between high and low height. A larger range means more pronounced water movement.

Most tables list the first high and first low of the day. Some days carry two highs or two lows; if you only see one, the cycle runs into the next 24 hours.

Shuwaikh vs Shuaiba: Not the Same Water

The two ports sit in different spots, so their tide timing differs. Shuwaikh is the more sheltered port and its water can lag slightly, while Shuaiba sits closer to open water, which shows up in the timing. That means you cannot take a Shuwaikh high tide time and apply it to Shuaiba, or the other way round. Read the column for the port you actually leave from, and if you are between the two, use the one closer to your launch spot.

Turning the Table Into a Trip Plan

Rather than memorising numbers, work through these steps:

• Pick your day and the hours you can realistically head out, not the perfect hours on paper.
• Write down that day's high and low water times in order.
• Set your window: if you prefer fishing rising water, start comfortably before high tide.
• Use the range for planning, since a big range means more moving water.
• Cross-check sea state and wind before trusting the table alone, because strong wind changes how the water actually sits.

Common Reading Mistakes

• Using a last month's table; timings shift from month to month.
• Forgetting local time. Use Kuwait time, not a device set to another zone.
• Ignoring the seasonal change; tide times move with the seasons and summer does not read like winter.
• Reading the time and skipping the height, which never tells you how high the water really gets.
