Rainy Season and Sea Trips: When to Hold Back

B7R Blog

Rain in Kuwait does not arrive as one long season. It comes in short, sharp batches, most often between November and April, with the odd surprise outside that window. The sea reacts faster than the forecast suggests.

What rain actually changes at sea

Visibility first. Rain and dust turn the horizon grey, and a mark or another boat sits further away than you think. Then gusts: a squall line delivers wind in minutes, not the gradual build you are used to.

Then the water draining off the land. Around Kuwait Bay and Shuaiba, runoff carries timber, plastic and rope into the water, and that debris floats where you will not see it at speed.

And cold, with a wet deck. Hands slow down, footing goes, and decisions take longer. All of it arrives before the swell looks serious.

Drizzle or squall line?

Drizzle comes from flat grey cloud, falls steadily, leaves visibility workable, and does not swing the wind. It is usually manageable if you are near your home berth and ready to turn back.

A squall line looks different: a dark, defined edge on the horizon, wind arriving ahead of the rain, and the surface going white quickly. That is not weather to sit through and assess. If the dark edge is tracking towards you, run for shelter before it arrives.

Three decision rules

If rain catches you out, do not push for a distant destination. The nearest safe berth beats the original plan. Keep rods low, stay clear of tall metal fittings, and keep everyone off the bow.

Check before you launch

Look at sea state and weather before you leave, then check again before you head back. The B7R app shows sea state and weather, tide times for Shuwaikh and Shuaiba ports, seasons, and a catch log for your notes after each trip.

With family or children aboard, base the call on the latest update, not the view at breakfast. Rain moves, and wind runs ahead of it.

Go / no-go checklist

Sea trips in the rainy window are possible, but they need a calmer decision than usual. Holding back is experience, not loss. Download the B7R app free on Google Play and check weather and tide before every trip: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.q8dm.b7r
