Pre-Trip Boat Inspection: Checklist

A pre-trip boat inspection takes about 30 minutes and saves you breakdowns, fines, and bad days on the water. In Kuwait the sea can turn fast, so run this checklist before every launch — the short trips too. Keep the same order each time: engine, fuel, battery, bilge, safety gear, anchor, ropes, lights, and the weather. Less than an hour on land, and it is worth every minute.

Engine, Fuel, Battery, and Bilge

Start in the engine bay. Check the oil level and the coolant. Look for fuel leaks, loose belts, and corroded wires. Start the engine at the dock and let it idle for five minutes. Listen for odd noises and watch the temperature gauge. A problem you find here is a job for the mechanic. The same problem mid-sea is an emergency. Then run these quick checks — they cover the failures that stop boats most often:

• Fuel: enough for the trip out, the trip back, and a reserve. Fill up before you leave the marina.
• Battery: full charge, clean terminals, tight connections, and a strap that holds it in rough water.
• Bilge: dry, and the pump runs when you test it with a bucket of water.

Safety Gear: Life Jackets, Flares, Fire Extinguisher, First Aid

Safety gear only works if it is on board, in date, and within reach. Count life jackets against the number of people coming with you. Check flare expiry dates — an expired flare is a paperweight when you need it most. Keep the extinguisher where the driver can grab it without climbing over gear.

• Life jacket for every person on board, correct size, sound straps.
• Flares with valid expiry dates.
• Fire extinguisher: charged, current inspection, within reach.
• First aid kit: bandages, gauze, antiseptic, painkillers, seasickness tablets.
• Whistle and a signal mirror for daytime distress.

Anchor, Ropes, Lights, and Communications

Check the anchor before you reach your spot, not after. It must suit the boat, with a sound chain and shackles. Run the rope through your hands and feel for frays — replace anything doubtful, because rope is cheaper than a boat. Test every navigation light in daylight, and keep spare bulbs on board. Charge your phone and VHF radio fully and pack a power bank in a dry bag.

Weather, Sea, and Tides

Check the forecast the night before and again in the morning. Wind direction matters more than wind speed in Kuwait: the north wind, or shamal, whips up a short sharp chop that punishes small boats. Tides matter most at the launch ramp. Many ramps in Kuwait turn shallow at low tide, and launching or recovering your boat becomes hard or impossible. Before you cast off, tell one person on shore where you are going and when you expect to be back. Send them the boat name and a rough route.
