Plankton: The Base of the Marine Food Chain

B7R Blog

What Plankton Actually Is

Plankton are drifting organisms, too small to see with the naked eye. Some are plant-like, called phytoplankton. Some are animal-like, called zooplankton. They cannot swim against the current, so they go where the water takes them.

You will find them from the surface to the bottom, and they are the smallest link in the sea and the most important one.

From Plankton to the Fish on Your Line

Phytoplankton build food from sunlight and nutrients. Zooplankton eat them. Then squid, shrimp and small baitfish feed on the zooplankton. Those become dinner for bigger fish: kingfish, hammour, and everything you catch off Kuwait.

Every fish you land sits at the end of a chain that starts with something you cannot see. That is not a distant science fact, it is the base of every bite you get.

How Plankton Connects to Bait

Here is the practical link: plankton draws baitfish, and baitfish draw the big fish. When the water looks green or cloudy, that is life, not a problem, and it tells you which bait to run.

Plankton and Kuwait Seasons

In the Gulf, production follows wind and tide. The shamal stirs the water and mixes nutrients, and the best fishing usually comes a day or two after it settles, not during the blow.

In summer the water gets hot and nutrients thin out, so plankton sinks deeper and fish spread over a wider area. In winter and spring, cooling water lifts nutrients from the bottom and the real seasons start: zubaidi first, then hammour, then kingfish.

Using It to Fish Better

Read the sea like a farmer reads soil. If the water is alive with colour and movement, stay and work the area, because the big fish are hunting the small ones. If birds are working, ease in quietly without spooking the school.

If it is clear and empty, move deeper or move on instead of burning time and fuel. Pair those observations with tide and sea state so you are not guessing. Over a few months your own notes become a pattern book for the marks you fish.

Fish Smarter With the B7R App

The B7R app is free on Google Play and brings tide tables for Shuwaikh and Shuaiba, sea state, the fish guide, seasons and your catch log together in one place. Use it to plan around the conditions that actually put fish in front of you.
