How to Plan a Safe Sea Trip

B7R Blog

A safe sea trip starts on land, long before you untie the ropes. In Kuwait the sea can go from glassy calm to rough water in a few hours, so a little planning is what separates a great day out from a story you do not want to tell.

Check the Weather and the Sea State First

Read the forecast for wind speed and direction, not just the temperature. Above roughly 15 to 20 knots, a small boat starts to get uncomfortable, and the sea state matters more than the sky โ€” check wave height, swell, and visibility before you commit to a route.

Recheck everything on the morning of the trip itself. Forecasts change overnight, and the conditions you saw yesterday are not a promise for today. If the outlook looks marginal, be ready to change the plan or stay home โ€” the sea will still be there next weekend.

The Pre-Departure Checklist

File a Float Plan and Know Your Channels

Tell someone on shore where you are going, who is on board, and when you expect to be back โ€” then call them the moment you return. If you do not show up, that person is your rescue plan; without them, nobody even knows you are missing.

Keep the emergency numbers saved in your phone before you head out. VHF channel 16 is the international distress channel, and the Kuwait Coast Guard is your first call on radio or phone when something goes wrong at sea.

Navigation, a Backup, and a Return Time

Plot your route on more than one source and carry a backup for the return leg โ€” a paper chart or a second app. Agree on your return time before you cast off, not when the sun starts dropping, and plan to be back at the dock before dark; conditions always look different at sunset, and fog or rising wind can turn a short hop into a long one.

The B7R app helps you plan the day properly: tide times for Kuwait's ports, the sea state, and seasonal notes before you leave, plus a fish guide and a catch log while you are out.

And if the day turns on you, the B7R app's SOS button is one more way to signal for help. Nothing replaces good judgment, though โ€” if the water tells you to turn back, turn back.

Take the app with you on the water. B7R is free on Google Play and gives you everything you need before you head out.
