Rules for Organized Trips to Kuwait's Islands

B7R Blog

An island trip is not a normal run. Failaka, Kubbar, Umm Al-Maradim, Qaruh, Miskan and Auhah each sit at a different distance with a different status, and the gap between a good day and a miserable one is decided before you leave the slip.

Check the rules with the competent authority first

Before you fix a date and call the crew, confirm the rules and permits for your island with the relevant Kuwaiti authority. Some islands are protected or have limits on timing and numbers. Don't plan a trip on "someone said" โ€” check the official source and build the plan around it.

Match the launch point to the island

Shuwaikh, Shuaiba, Fantas, Doha and Fahaheel all work as launch points, but distance changes everything. Failaka, Miskan and Auhah are closer runs; Kubbar, Umm Al-Maradim and Qaruh are open-water trips that need real slack in the schedule.

Not every launch point suits every island. For the longer runs, work out fuel and reserve, and check the water two days out. B7R puts the wave readout and the Shuwaikh and Shuaiba tide tables together, so your departure time is a decision, not a guess.

Set roles, not just a headcount

Fix the exact number of people and give everyone a job: trip leader, safety lead, food and water, communications. On an island with no signal, an unassigned group is how people get separated.

Time the trip around the tide

Tides run differently at Shuwaikh, Shuaiba and Fahaheel, so agree the launch and return times and share them with everyone. The water won't wait for a slow morning or an extra cup of tea.

Leave the island cleaner than you found it

Bring one rubbish bag per person and take everything back with you. Respect protected areas, keep away from nesting birds, and put fires out properly before you leave rather than giving them a quick splash.

Pre-launch checklist

Log the trip when you're back. The catch log in the B7R app shows which island worked and in what conditions, and the navigation tools make the same run easier next time.

If the forecast looks marginal, shorten the trip instead of cancelling it โ€” a quick stop on the nearest island beats no island at all, and you'll still be home before the wind builds.
