Who was the nawakhida?

The nawakhida was the dhow captain and navigator, the one who decided when the ship sailed, where it dove, and when it returned. In the pearl-diving days before oil, the title carried skill, reputation, and real responsibility.

A ship did not move without his word, and he carried the weight of both the crew and the season's earnings. Nobody became a nawakhida by accident: it took years at sea, a working knowledge of tides and winds, and remembered dive sites.

He also dealt with the merchants who financed the voyage and split the proceeds at the end, so the role was half seamanship and half business.

The crew: every role mattered

A pearl-diving dhow was a full team, each person knowing exactly what to do. One weak link could affect the whole ship, and the roles were well defined:

• Nawakhida: captain, decision-maker, and the one accountable for ship and crew.
• Ghais (diver): descended to the seabed to collect oyster shells, working on measured breath.
• Saib: pulled the diver back up by rope from the surface, the diver's lifeline and safety.
• Nahham: the singer, keeping morale up with songs and rhythm for the divers.
• Mujadimi: the youngest hand, serving on deck and learning the trade from scratch.

Those roles were not decorative. The diver depended on the saib second by second, and the whole crew moved to the rhythm of the nahham's voice.

Dive seasons and navigation by the stars

The dive had a known season, usually starting in summer with the long dive, and crews returned before the winter cold set in. Voyages lasted months, and families waited patiently for the ships to come home.

Before modern instruments and charts, the nawakhida navigated by stars, wind, and remembered positions, reading direction from familiar constellations and the pole. That knowledge passed from generation to generation through practice rather than books.

Oil changed the trade, but not the temperament of Kuwait's seafarers. Boats now go out for fishing and leisure, and today's captain worries about sea state, wind, and seasons instead of pearls.
