Kuwait has more than ten islands, and each one has its own distance, depth and challenges. If you are planning a run between them, the difference between a good day and a long one usually comes down to what you did before you started the engine.
Bubiyan is Kuwait's largest island, and access depends on Khor Bubiyan and the designated navigation channel. Boaters heading in normally follow known routes because shallow, muddy water surrounds much of the island, and bigger hulls need reliable depth. Warba sits further out and demands a better sea state, so pick a day with light wind and calm conditions before committing, and never cut between the small islands without local knowledge of the channels.
Failaka is the closest inhabited island to the mainland, and the run from areas like Shuwaikh or Ras Al Ardh is relatively short. It offers sandy beaches and calmer water than mid-Gulf, but boat traffic builds up on weekends, so slow down on approach and respect moored boats. Kubbar is a small island off Salmiya and works well for a day trip, with water around it that suits fishing and snorkeling on clear days.
Umm Al Maradim and Qaruh lie to the southeast, and the run is longer — it requires more fuel and a realistic time plan. The water is clearer and the horizon wider, which is why divers and anglers favor them. Keep in mind this area is more exposed to northern winds, so conditions change faster than at the near islands. Carry extra reserve and do not assume another boat is close enough to help.
The best window for island runs is usually dawn or early morning, when the wind is lighter and the water is smoother, with a return to shore before the afternoon breeze builds. On longer runs such as Umm Al Maradim or Qaruh, plan to come back in the same conditions you left in rather than pushing into the dark.
Kuwait's islands hold sensitive beaches, plant life and marine species, and some are protected reserves. Take your waste back with you, lift your anchor carefully away from reef, and stay clear of seabird nesting areas during breeding season. Keep only what you need, and learn the allowed size for each species before you target it. The coastline you enjoy today is the same one the next generation should get to enjoy.
