Making the Most of Low Tide: Spots and Methods

Most anglers treat low tide as the end of the trip: the water drops, the flat dries, the boat sits on the bottom. That is backwards. Low tide is the only time you can walk the sea floor, read it, and fish water no boat can reach.

Wade the flat while it is open

The moment the water starts dropping, don't pack up. Pull on rubber boots and walk out. It gets shallow enough to put real distance between you and the beach, and to reach reef edges and sandbars you normally only see from above. Keep moving and spread your casts instead of parking in one spot.

Look for bottom changes: a rock just under the surface, the lip of a sandbar, or a line where sand turns to mud. That is where fish travel. Everything else is empty ground.

Channels and drop-offs: where the fish hold

As the flats drain, water collects in channels and creeks, and the fish go with it. The channel in front of you is deeper than it was an hour ago, and usually holds more fish than any other water around. Stand on the edge and fish the deep side.

• Channel mouth and creek: where food moves through, fish sit.
• Sandbar edges: one step separates shallow from deep.
• Exposed rocks and reef tops: mark them now, they hold fish when the water returns.
• Harbour and breakwater mouths: still deep at the entrance, even on the lowest tide.

Low tide also lets you read the seabed. Log the coordinates of the holes, rocks and edges you uncover, then return to those spots on the rising tide — a private map of the area.

Light gear and methods that work

Low tide does not call for heavy weight or long casts — the opposite. Travel light: small sinkers, small baits, a shorter rod you can carry while walking. Live bait such as shrimp works well, and small soft plastics are excellent on foot because short casts cover a lot of ground. Stay quiet too: fish feel your footsteps before they see your bait. Safety: don't learn it the hard way

• Mud: some flats are soft mud that swallows you to the knee and beyond. Stay off ground you do not know.
• Returning water: it floods the flat and cuts you off faster than you expect. Check behind you constantly.
• Getting cut off: never head for a distant sandbar without an obvious way back, and set your turn-around time before you step down.
• Heat: low tide usually falls in the hottest part of the day. Carry water, a cap and shade, and keep the walk reasonable.
• Tell someone: say where you are going and when you will be back. Check tide times for Shuaiba and Shuwaikh and the sea state in the B7R app, and remember the SOS button.

Back home, log the trip in the catch log with a note on the spot and conditions. Within a few trips the good marks are yours alone.
