Main Line and Leader: Choosing the Right Size

B7R Blog

The most common question at the dock is line size. There is no single number that works everywhere. It comes down to three things: what you are targeting, where you are fishing, and what the bottom looks like.

Go too light and a good fish snaps you off. Go too heavy and you get no bites at all. Match your tackle to the day, not to the biggest spool in the shop. In Kuwait the sea changes fast with tide, shamal and seasons.

Main Line and Leader Do Different Jobs

The main line sits on the reel and fills the spool. Its job is to cast far and take the long runs, so it should be thin and smooth to leave the guides fast.

The leader is the short piece, one to two metres, between the main line and the hook or lure. Its job is to survive abrasion against rock, handle sharp teeth, and carry the load right at the fish.

The golden rule: a light main line plus a slightly heavier leader gives you distance and durability together.

Mono or Braid?

Both have a place, and the choice comes down to your water and your method.

Numbers That Actually Work

Match breaking strain to the fish, not to your ego. These starting points cover most days:

If you are unsure, start with a 15 lb main and a 20 lb leader. That covers most Kuwait trips, from Shuwaikh to the northern marks.

Leader Length and Knots

A short leader of 30-60 cm suits clear, calm water and long casts. Around rock, or in a shamal, run one to two metres so the leader takes the abrasion instead of your main line.

For joining braid to leader, the FG knot is the cleanest: it passes the guides without catching. If you have not learned it, Uni-to-Uni is easier and works well with mono. To tie the leader to the hook, a Palomar or Uni gives strong, compact knots.

Change Your Leader for the Fish and the Bottom

Hammour lives in the rock. There a heavier 30-40 lb fluoro leader is the difference between landing a fish and losing it. Same story for big zubaidi over mixed mud and rock.

For shy fish, go the other way. A light 8-12 lb leader draws more bites from picky species. Finesse beats brute force when the fish are pressured.

Keep It Simple With the B7R App

The B7R app is free on Google Play and puts tide tables for Shuwaikh and Shuaiba, sea state, the fish guide, seasons and your catch log in one place. Check conditions before you rig up, then log what worked.
