If you find a productive fishing mark and want to return to it next week, you need a way to get back to exactly the same spot, not roughly close. Line-up navigation, also called transit navigation, is the oldest and often the most accurate method: pick two shore objects and keep them on a single line, and that line fixes your course.
Choose two fixed landmarks on land, like a tower and a mosque, or a headland and a marker. When both objects line up over each other from your position, you are on a known line. Take a second line-up from another angle, and where the two lines cross is your position, with high accuracy.
The key is separation: the further apart the two landmarks are, the longer and more reliable the line. Two objects close together give you a short line that is easy to misread, while distant ones give a steady line that holds up as the boat moves.
Before you trust a line-up, test it on two different trips and confirm it gives the same result. Accuracy improves when you stand at the same angle and face the same way each time.
The first mistake is ignoring the tide: as water rises and falls, the depth changes and your secondary cue drifts. The second is shoal creep, where a sandbar shifts or disappears over time and gives a false sense of safety. The third is drift, when the current pushes the boat sideways while you look away.
So re-check your line-ups on every trip, and log the date, the depth, and the result. If something changes, correct your note immediately instead of trusting a feeling next time.
GPS is excellent, but it is not a substitute for your eyes: batteries die and the signal weakens near some islands. Use line-ups to confirm the GPS position and GPS to confirm the line-up, and the mix gives you double confidence. The B7R app gives you tide tables for Shuwaikh and Shuaiba ports, sea state, a fish guide, a catch log, seasons, navigation tools, and an SOS button — and it is free on Google Play, so you can log your fast marks there too.
The takeaway: learn three line-ups near your favourite marks, write them down, and repeat them every trip. The B7R app keeps your navigation tools and trip information in one place before and after you launch.
