If one fish unites all of Kuwait's anglers, it is the kingfish — locally called kanad. Fast, powerful, and at the first strike it feels like you hooked a small train. One good kanad session makes you forget everything before it. Here is how to target them properly.

Kingfish season in Kuwait

Kingfish prefer cooler water, so the strongest season starts in autumn and runs through late spring. In summer, when the sea warms up, they leave the surface and move deeper, and fishing slows — but it never stops completely. First light and late evening still produce. The rule of thumb: cooler weather means more kingfish.

Where kingfish gather

Kingfish hunt sardines, so look for sardines: around reefs and shallow ledges, around islands like Failaka and Kubbar, and along the Khiran coast. Watch the birds — diving gulls mark the bait ball before you see it with your own eyes.

The gear you need

• Rod: 7 to 9 feet, medium-heavy power, able to take a hard strike.
• Reel: 4000-size or larger, or an overhead, spooled with 30 to 50 lb line.
• Short wire leader: kanad have sharp teeth that cut ordinary line — use 30–50 cm of wire.
• Jigs and sinkers: match the current — heavy in moving water, light when the sea is calm.

Best methods for kingfish

• Jigging: cast and retrieve fast with a sardine chunk or a metal jig — the most popular method here, deadly at dawn.
• Live bait: a live sardine swimming under a float — it tempts the big kanad to reveal itself.
• Trolling: pulling bait behind the boat at medium speed — covers a wide area and finds active fish.

Practical tips that make the difference

• Best times: dawn until sunrise, and late afternoon until sunset.
• When it strikes, do not set the hook instantly — let it take the bait and turn, then hit hard.
• If a fish cuts your line, move spots — a spooked kingfish takes the whole school with it.
• Stay calm on big fish; you tire before it does if you rush.
