On weekends the beaches fill up fast, and more boats in the water mean you need to be sharper and more careful. Before you hit the throttle and leave the shore, take a few minutes to learn the basics — they can save your life. The golden rule: the sea respects those who respect it, and carelessness comes at a high price.

Essential gear before you launch

Having the right gear makes the difference between a great trip and a dangerous one. Make sure you have:

• Life jacket: wear it at all times, even if you're a strong swimmer.
• Kill switch lanyard: always clipped to your wrist.
• Phone in a waterproof pouch: your first line of communication in an emergency.
• A whistle or a small mirror to get the attention of boats nearby.

If you're riding with your kids, make sure each one has their own life jacket in the right size.

Pre-trip checks

Before you leave the beach, ask yourself three questions. Is the fuel tank full? Distances at sea are deceiving, and running out of petrol offshore is a problem you don't want. What does the weather look like? Check the sea state, and if the waves are high or the sea is rough, postpone the trip for another day. And how is the jet ski itself? Riding rules and etiquette

The sea belongs to everyone, and respect is the foundation of every trip:

• Never ride near swimmers or divers — keep a clear safety distance.
• Stay inside the designated jet ski areas and don't cross the boundaries.
• Respect the no-go zones around Shuwaikh Port and the oil piers — getting close is both risky and illegal.
• Kuwait often requires a licensed operator, so don't ride without your license and don't carry extra passengers.

Hazards in Kuwaiti waters

Kuwait's waters are always busy: fast fishing boats, large cargo ships, and sudden weather changes. Keep watching your surroundings at all times and slow down near the shore where the water gets shallow. Waves can also build suddenly by midday, so keep an eye on the sky and the water around you. Watch for leisure boats that change direction suddenly, and keep a speed that lets you react safely. Popular spots like Salmiya, Bida'a, Shuwaikh, Messila, and Al Khiran are great places to ride, but each area has its own rules and traffic.

What to do if your jet ski flips or breaks down

Stay calm. A jet ski floats even when flipped over, so hold onto it — don't swim away. Use your whistle or wave your arm to attract attention, and if someone is close by, signal them clearly. Then call your friend on shore, and if you can't reach them, try to get the attention of any boat nearby.
