Swimming Around Kuwait's Islands: Bubiyan, Failaka and Qaruh

Swimming at Kuwait's public beaches like Messila or Khiran follows a familiar rhythm: shallow water, plenty of people, lifeguards nearby, and help only minutes away. Swimming around islands such as Bubiyan, Failaka and Qaruh is a different situation, even when the water looks identical from the boat.

Why island water behaves differently

• Stronger, faster currents: more water moves between the island and the mainland, and the flow pushes a swimmer quicker than it feels.
• Sandbars drop off suddenly: you wade at knee depth, then two steps later the bottom is gone.
• No lifeguards: the islands are unmonitored, and rescue needs a boat rather than a car.
• Close to boat lanes: traffic passes between Failaka and the coast, and a swimmer inside a lane is a hazard to everyone.
• Weak mobile coverage in places, so a call for help may not go through easily.

Each island is not the same spot

Bubiyan has wide, shallow mudflats and access is governed by special rules, so never assume a landing point is open just because it looks quiet. Qaruh is a small, distant sand island that needs a longer trip; it offers clearer, calmer water but sits furthest from any help. Failaka is the closest and sees the most boat traffic, which means people are nearer, yet the current around it stays stronger than at a public beach.

So do not grade an island against a beach you know: every spot has its own slope and flow, and the decision starts from information, not from the view.

Sandbars are the bigger risk

The most common mistake is the sandbar. You step in happily because the water is at your knee, then the slope turns steep and you lose your footing. A small child cannot read that change and usually keeps moving forward instead of back.

Test the bottom step by step before shifting your weight, and avoid any spot where waves break far from shore, since breaking water usually marks a bar or a sudden drop.

A quick check before you get in

• Check the tide times before the trip; low tide gives calmer water and a weaker push near the sandbars.
• Pick one clear exit point on shore and keep it fixed in your head.
• Never swim alone, and leave someone on shore watching you and timing the minutes.
• Stay away from anchorages and boat lanes, and leave a wide margin for passing traffic.
• Life jackets for children, and keep a child within one step, not within sight.
• Carry water and a snack, and do not rely on a single phone for everything.

With children the margin is tighter

Keep children at chest depth or less, away from sandbars and from any spot where water moves between the island and the mainland. The gap between you and a child should be one step, not one glance. If a child cannot swim well, they should not be in anything deeper than knee height.

If a current pulls you and you cannot return to the same point, do not fight it: swim sideways with the current until it eases, then angle back to shore. That rule saves more people than strength does.
