A moored boat is never really parked. It rises and drops with the water all day, whether anyone is watching or not. What the Tide Does to a Moored Boat

As the tide comes up, the hull floats higher and the distance to its tie point shrinks. A line that was snug in the morning goes slack, and the boat gains room to move. Practical Checks Before a Big Tide

• Add fenders, especially on the side facing a neighbour or the dock.
• Check every line for length from the highest tide to the lowest low.
• Inspect chafe gear on rings, cleats and the dock edge.
• Confirm the knot and the condition of the fitting you are trusting.
• Clear loose gear on deck that the wind can catch and that adds lean.
