Heavy Rain and Hail in the Gulf: Boater Precautions

B7R Blog

Winter in the Gulf is not all gentle rain. Sudden squalls โ€” sarayat โ€” can drop heavy rain and even hail and turn the sea in minutes. Boaters who see it coming act early; those who rush get caught. Here are the precautions, in plain terms.

What is a saraya, and why is it the real danger?

A saraya is a fast thunderstorm riding a cold front, bringing strong wind, heavy rain and sometimes hail. The signs show up before it hits: tall dark cloud, a cold gust out of nowhere, thunder in the distance. If you see those and you are already afloat, that is your signal to run for shelter, not to finish the trip.

Check these before you launch

Why hail damages your boat

Hail falls as fast chunks of ice and strikes anything exposed: antennas, lights, even an open hull. The worst part is that it arrives with heavy rain, so visibility collapses in seconds. Caught in a hail cell, well offshore and alone, you face both at once.

Cover the electronics

Water and hail kill electronics. Before you leave, cover engine displays, the VHF set and phone chargers with plastic or a waterproof cover. Keep batteries and cables clear of spray and leaks, and put your phone in a sealed pouch. A cheap charger dies from a single drop of water.

Weather turns bad: the decision not to launch

The hardest call and the most important one is staying ashore. If rain cuts visibility, if hail starts, or if wind makes handling unsafe, leave the trip for tomorrow. The fish are not going anywhere, but a small boat cannot ride out a storm in open water. A safe trip beats a risky one every time.

Near shore and if it goes wrong

Heavy rain floods low coastal roads quickly in areas like Doha and Fahaheel and around Kuwait Bay. If the road floods on your way back, do not gamble โ€” water hides potholes and drains. Stop and wait, or take higher ground. And do not forget lightning: on open water your boat is the highest point, so stay clear of metal antennas and keep everyone low inside. If a storm catches you, call 112, point the bow into the waves, secure your gear and tell your crew your plan. Coming home safely matters more than anything you set out to do.
