Why Every Kuwaiti Angler Needs a GPS

The sea plays tricks on your memory. Once you leave Shuwaikh or Shuwaiba port and run a few miles out, every reef and fishing hole starts to look the same. Without coordinates, finding your spot again is luck, not skill.

A GPS gives you a precise position, so you can mark the exact reef where the fish were biting and come back to it the next day — instead of drifting around for an hour. Most importantly, it guides you back to port safely in darkness or haze.

• Handheld units (like Garmin): tough, waterproof, and run all day on AA or rechargeable batteries.

When you reach a productive reef or a known drop-off, drop a waypoint and name it something you will recognize: "reef off Al-Yemeniya", "Shuwaiba drop-off". Do not trust memory alone — the sea changes and landmarks disappear.

Coordinates transfer easily between devices and apps, so you can share spots with your fishing buddies. In Kuwaiti waters, common reference points include the Al-Yemeniya oil platforms, the offshore Burgan field rigs, and islands like Failaka, Kubbar, and Umm al-Maradim.

Navigating Back to Port Safely

Use the track or backtracking function. The unit records your route out and then guides you back along the same line — essential when you have run far offshore from Shuwaikh or Shuwaiba.

Before you move, save a waypoint at the harbor entrance. If anything goes wrong, you can point straight at that waypoint and follow it home.

Common Mistakes That Ruin a Trip

• Wrong datum: make sure your unit is set to WGS84, or your coordinates can be off by hundreds of meters.
• Dead battery: charge everything the night before and carry a power bank.
• Water damage: keep the unit in a dry bag or waterproof case.
• No starting point: always save the waypoint where you launched the boat before moving.

Know the Limits: GPS Does Not Tell You Everything

A GPS tells you where you are, not what the sea is doing. Offshore, phone signal disappears, so never rely on an app that needs internet — download offline maps before you leave and keep a standalone unit on board.
