Fishing Under Lights at Night in Kuwait: A Setup Guide

B7R Blog

Fishing under a light is one of the oldest tricks in Kuwait, and it still beats most gadgets. The logic is simple: light gathers life, and life gathers fish. What separates a good night from a wasted one is rarely luck โ€” it is how you set the light, where you anchor, and when you leave.

Why a light works at all

Switch on a lamp over dark water and plankton starts drifting toward it within minutes. Small baitfish follow the plankton, and bigger fish follow the baitfish. That chain is the whole trick. You are not attracting fish directly; you are building a small food web beside the boat and waiting for the top of it to arrive.

Water near structure gives that chain somewhere to form โ€” a wreck, a reef edge, a drop-off. A bright light over flat shallow sand mostly feeds small fish and mosquitoes.

Floating lamp or generator

A floating LED lamp on a short line is the easy option. It runs on a battery, throws a clean pool of white light, and you can push it away from the hull so fish are not spooked by the boat. A generator with a floodlight gives far more reach and can hold a bigger bait ball, but it is loud, it drinks fuel, and it needs a safe, ventilated spot away from anything that can spark.

What shows up under the glow

Squid gather fast under a steady light, often within the first hour โ€” this is the most reliable catch of the night. Small trevally and similar fish work the edges, and on good nights kingfish cruise the dark boundary just outside the beam, where bait is silhouetted against the light.

Fish the edge, not the bright centre. Predators hunt the line between light and dark, so drop your bait where the glow fades and let it sink along that border.

Safety once it is dark

Anchor light on, always, and check it from a distance before you commit. Keep a headlamp with a red mode so you can tie knots and sort tackle without losing your night vision, and point white light down at the deck, never out at the water.

Stay well clear of shipping lanes. Shuwaikh and Shuaiba are working ports, and a lit boat parked in a channel is hard for a ship's bridge to pick out until it is too late. Anchor outside the lane, and keep a knife, a first aid kit and the SOS button within reach.

Pick the night with the tide

A moving tide beats a pretty forecast. Fish feed when water is pushing, so check the tide times for Shuwaikh and Shuaiba in the B7R app and plan your session around the run rather than the clock. The B7R app also gives you sea state before you launch, a catch log to see which light-and-tide combination actually produced fish, and the seasons calendar for what should be around.
