Most anglers pick a spot because someone said it produces. The ground underneath decides whether that is true or pure luck. Sand, mud, rock and old metal each hold different fish, and each one needs a different bait, rig and tide.
Here is what each bottom type means for you, and how to work it in Kuwaiti water.
Fish gather where food and cover exist. Clean sand holds almost nothing, so fish cross it but rarely settle. Hard, mixed or broken ground collects shellfish, shrimp and baitfish โ and that is what everything bigger feeds on.
Two pins twenty metres apart can fish completely differently. That is normal physics, not bad luck.
Open sand means open ground. Fish here are usually travelling in groups โ sheim and kingfish on the move, plus maid over the flats.
This rewards mobility, not patience. Do not park on one spot all day if nothing is happening.
Mud usually sits near outlets and quiet, sheltered areas. It holds a lot of life, but lead sinks into it and your bait disappears into the ooze.
Use lighter lead and lift the bait slightly off the bottom. That one adjustment is the difference between a decent session and a day of landing mud.
This is hamour and naseer country. Rock creates ledges and holes where fish hold tight to structure and ambush from cover.
Your problem here is not finding fish, it is losing rigs. Step up line class, add a shock leader, and lift fast after the bite so you do not get bricked.
The same logic applies to wrecks: any sunken steel, pylons or old hull becomes instant artificial reef, because structure collects the food chain around it.
The current-facing side usually holds the most fish because food arrives with the flow. Expect snags everywhere, so use a breakaway rig and lose the weight, not the whole leader and a fish.
You do not need expensive gear for a first guess:
Log every mark, depth and tide stage in the B7R catch log. After a handful of trips you have a personal chart that beats any tip on a forum, and B7R's navigation tools help you sit exactly on the pin.
Stop asking "where are the fish?" and start asking "what is the bottom here?". A good spot is not a famous name โ it is ground you understand and read correctly.
