Fishing and Boat Licences in Kuwait: The Official Steps

B7R Blog

If you want to fish in Kuwaiti waters or put a boat in the sea, the first thing you deal with is the licence. It is not complicated, but it needs order: prepare the documents, pass the inspections, register the boat, then keep renewing. This guide walks you through the steps.

One important note before we start: official licensing procedures and fees change from time to time. Numbers and names get updated, so do not rely on any figure you hear. Always confirm with the competent authority before you apply.

First, know which licence you need

Before you begin, decide what you want. A personal fishing licence is not the same as a boat operating licence, and neither is the same as registering the boat itself. Each has its own requirements and paperwork. Ask the competent authority which type fits your case.

If you own a boat, you will likely need to register it, hold an operating permit, and possibly a separate permit to fish from it. Do not assume one document covers everything.

Documents to prepare before applying

Most delays come from missing paperwork. Prepare clear, valid copies before you go, and keep them together in one file.

Make sure names and numbers match across every paper. A small error in a hull number can stop the application for a week.

Medical and technical inspection

A medical check is standard for fishing and boat licences, especially for professional fishing or a regularly used boat. It confirms you are fit to work at sea and usually covers vision, hearing, and general fitness.

The technical inspection confirms the hull is sound, the engine runs, and the safety equipment is present. Prepare the boat before the appointment, or a gap in equipment sends you back.

Registering the boat

Registration gives the boat an official number and links it to your name. You provide the full details: length, type, material, model, and hull and engine numbers. After registration you receive the registration document, the main paper proving your ownership.

Display the registration number clearly on the outside of the boat. Do not cover it or remove it.

Renewing and keeping papers on board

Licences do not last forever, so renew before they expire. Set a reminder well ahead, because renewal takes time. It usually needs the same core documents, and sometimes a fresh technical inspection if the boat is older.

Keep on board at all times: a copy of the registration, the operating licence, and insurance documents if you have them. Wet or damaged papers create problems in any inspection.

Why applications get delayed

Most delays look the same: missing documents, mismatched details, a failed technical inspection, a boat without the required safety equipment, or applying at a busy time. Re-check your file before you go.

Once you are licensed and your papers are complete, you relax more and fish longer. The B7R app helps you plan the trip: tide times for Shuwaikh and Shuaiba ports, sea state and weather, and a fish guide. It also has an SOS emergency button.
