Fishing With the Family: Planning the Day in Kuwait

B7R Blog

A fishing trip with children is not a scaled-down version of your normal trip. It is a different trip with a different goal: everybody comes home in a good mood, and maybe one small fish gets caught. Plan around that and the day works. Plan around your own fishing and it falls apart by hour two.

Keep the Trip Short

Two to three hours on the water is plenty with children under ten. Pick a launch close to home so the run out is ten or fifteen minutes instead of forty. A short run means less sun, less fuel and a faster way back.

Morning beats afternoon. The water is usually calmer before the wind builds, and kids are at their best right after breakfast. In summer, first light until about eight. In winter, mid-morning once the chill lifts.

Pick the Tide Window First

Kids get bored and queasy in a bouncing boat, and tide is a big part of that. Around the turn of the tide the water goes slack and the boat sits still. Against a running tide with wind on it, you get the short chop that ruins a small trip.

Check tide times for Shuwaikh or Shuaiba and aim to be afloat for the two hours either side of slack water, which is also when bottom fish feed comfortably.

Gear Sized for Small Hands

Most kids catch their first fish straight down beside the boat, in eight to fifteen metres, over sand or mixed ground.

Show them how to feel the bite with a finger on the line, then let them hold the rod.

Shade, Water and Sun

Shade is safety equipment, not comfort. A canopy over the seating area is the difference between a good trip and a miserable one. Dress kids in light long sleeves and a wide hat, and reapply sunscreen every two hours โ€” reflection off the water doubles the exposure.

Bring more water than you think you need, snacks that do not melt, a change of clothes in a dry bag, and one small towel per child. Life jackets must be sized by weight and worn from the dock, not stowed under a seat.

When Boredom Hits

It will hit around the forty-minute mark if the fish are quiet. Have a plan before it happens: let them steer at low speed with an adult beside them, hand them a handline, or move to a second spot nearby. A snack break resets the mood better than a speech about patience.

Keep a catch log of what worked with the kids โ€” time, tide, spot, bait, depth. After three or four trips the pattern shows up and you stop guessing. The B7R app covers tides for Shuwaikh and Shuaiba ports, sea state, a fish guide and a catch log, and it is free on Google Play.

One fish is enough. A child who lands one small fish on a short, calm, shady trip will ask to go again. A child who spends four hours in the sun with nothing on the line will not.
