You can spend a fortune on fishing gear in Kuwait and still catch the same fish as the guy next to you with one rod and a bag of shrimp. Here is what actually matters, and what you can comfortably skip for now.
Start with a 7 to 9 foot medium-action rod. It is long enough to cast from shore and short enough to handle on a boat. For line, 15 to 25 lb covers most shore species, with a short fluorocarbon leader to reduce cut-offs near rocks and reef edges.
A 3000 to 4000 size spinning reel balances well with a medium rod. Carry a spare spool of line — Kuwait's coastline is rocky and you will lose rigs. Ten cheap rigs beat one expensive rig you are afraid to use.
Standard monofilament is stretchy, forgiving, and ideal for beginners. If you fish close to rocks, step up the breaking strain or add a fluorocarbon leader. Braid gives much better bite sensitivity, but it needs a strong, well-tied knot and more careful maintenance.
