An echo sounder is one of the most useful tools on a small boat, but it only helps if you read it right. Most of the frustration anglers feel is not the unit's fault โ it comes from a handful of avoidable mistakes. Here are the common ones, and how to fix them.
With a few good habits, your sounder goes from a confusing screen to a clear picture of what is under the boat.
Too much gain fills the screen with noise, and too little hides fish and structure. Start low, then raise the gain slowly until you see a thin, hard bottom line with light speckles above it โ not a thick fuzzy band.
If the whole screen is full of clutter, you have gone too far. Turn it down until the noise clears, then stop.
A transducer that is not level, or is mounted where bubbles pass under it, will give weak or missing readings. It should sit flat and square on the hull, in clean water with no strakes or fittings directly ahead of it.
Even a small air gap or a little paint on the face can kill the signal. Check the mounting angle and clean the face while the boat is out of the water.
A hard, rocky bottom shows as a thin, sharp, strong return. Soft mud shows as a thick, weak band. Anglers often call mud "fish" because it looks irregular โ but real fish appear as separated arches or marks that lift off the bottom.
Higher frequency gives a sharper, more detailed picture but does not reach as deep. Lower frequency punches deeper but shows less detail. Match the frequency to the depth you are fishing instead of using one setting everywhere.
Tide and current also move fish and change the depth under your hull. A spot that reads deep at high tide can be dangerously shallow a few hours later, so check the tide times for Shuwaikh and Shuaiba before you plan your run.
Never keep another boat's settings โ every hull and mounting is different, so what worked on your friend's boat may fail on yours. Save your own depth offset, gain and frequency, and re-check them at the start of each trip.
The B7R app makes the planning side easy: check tide times, sea state and weather, log your catch, and keep your marks in one place. It is free on Google Play and works as a simple companion to your sounder.
Fixing these mistakes takes one trip. Read your screen carefully, adjust slowly, and you will trust what it tells you.
