Dead Bait: When It Works Better Than Live Bait in Kuwait

B7R Blog

Dead bait is not the fallback you use when the shrimp die on you. Fished properly on the bottom, it out-catches live bait on most Kuwait trips: cheaper, easier to store, and it stays on the hook once the current starts pulling.

Scent arrives before sight

A fish does not see your bait from twenty metres away. What reaches it first is the trail, the blood and oil bleeding off the flesh into moving water. Squid and shrimp release that trail continuously, and the tide carries it into a narrow band where fish gather.

That is why dead bait owns the bottom. Hamour, shaeri and niser sit close to structure and hunt by scent, not by chase.

Where dead bait wins

What to keep in the freezer

Frozen shrimp and squid are cheaper and more reliable than anything you can buy live at short notice. Thaw them in the fridge or in cold seawater, never in the sun and never in fresh water, which turns shrimp soft and washes the scent out.

Squid is the better bottom bait. It stays on the hook, survives current and keeps releasing scent. If a bag has sat in the freezer for months and smells strong, that is not a defect. That is the point.

Rigging it so it does not spin

The most common mistake is a bait that spins on the retrieve. A spinning bait twists your line, and twisted line fails at the worst possible moment. Keep the bait straight along the shank, run the hook in one end and out the other, or pass it through the tough collar.

Match the size. A big chunk on a small hook covers the point and catches nothing. In heavy current, go smaller and heavier rather than bigger and lighter.

Where it loses, honestly

In clear, calm water with fish that hunt by sight, kanad and trevally for example, live bait wins. A predator chasing baitfish needs movement, and dead bait on the surface does almost nothing.

Timing matters more than bait type. Check the tide for Shuwaikh and Shuaiba in the B7R app before you commit, because a fast-running tide spreads scent further and puts dead bait in front of more fish.

Bottom line

Dead bait is a tool, not a compromise. Read the current, rig it straight, let the scent work, and log the results. After a month the pattern is obvious: which tide, which hour, which bait.
