Coral Reefs in Kuwait

Kuwait's sea is shallow, warm and often murky, so many people are surprised to hear there are reefs here at all. There are — but they don't look like the colourful reefs of the Red Sea. They are patchy hard-bottom communities, and for a fisherman they are irreplaceable ground.

Here's where they are, what they are, and how to work them without wrecking them.

Where are Kuwait's reefs?

• Qaruh Island — the farthest offshore, with the clearest water and the most coral cover in Kuwait.
• Umm al-Maradim — a small island with coral patches and rocky bottom around it.
• Kubbar — popular with divers, with coral heads and hard bottom on its reef flat.
• Khor Abdullah — in the north, rocky hard ground that holds fish in numbers.
• The islands area — Auhah, Failaka and the shallow banks around them carry scattered hard-bottom patches.

What kind of reefs are they?

They are best described as patchy hard-bottom communities. Summer water temperatures climb past what most corals tolerate, and sediment and coastal filling cut the light, so instead of dense reef frameworks you get low coral cover alongside sponges, algae, oysters and tube worms. What you do get is a lot of life packed onto very little structure — and hard bottom is a scarce habitat in the Gulf.

Which fish depend on them?

Anything that needs cover turns up on reef. The fish anglers look for are hamour, naisar, safi and faskar. Why reefs matter to fishermen

Reef is nursery, feeding ground and ambush point at the same time. Lose it and you lose the fish around it. If a mark that used to produce has gone quiet, changing reef health is often the reason — reef health shows up directly in catches.

Threats to Kuwait's reefs

• Summer bleaching — repeated heat stress kills coral and leaves bare rock.
• Anchoring damage — one anchor breaks decades of growth in seconds.

• Coastal filling and dredging — smothers hard bottom and clouds the water.

How to anchor without wrecking the reef

Rule one: never drop anchor on coral or hard bottom. Find a sandy patch close by, set the anchor there, and let out enough line to hold. If the bottom is all structure, drift instead, or tie off to a mooring where one exists. When you leave, lift the anchor by motoring up over it — do not drag it to break it free, because dragging tears everything in its path.

Diving and spearfishing responsibly

• Keep fins and hands off coral; one kick can break a colony years in the making.
• Take only what you need, and leave the small ones — they haven't spawned yet.
• Never stand on hard bottom in the shallows; that is living reef, not a rock.
• Report lost nets and gear, and take your rubbish back with you.
