Cleaning and Preserving Seashells: A Practical Guide

You come back from the beach with a bag of shells, sand packed inside them and salt stuck to the surface. What you do in the next few days decides whether those shells last for years on a shelf or end up in the bin within a week.

First Step: Sort and Inspect

Open the bag on a tray and separate the shells so air reaches them. The best collecting window is the last hour before low tide and the first hour after it, when the water pulls back and exposes what was covered. Collection Ethics: Two Rules You Do Not Break

• Never take a shell with a live animal inside. If it is tightly closed, or glossy and wet inside, or smells strong, put it back.
• Never collect inside protected areas. Marine reserves such as Boubyan Island and Sulaibikhat Bay are off limits for collecting.
• Take a few. A small number is enough for display, and the rest stays on the beach.
• Turn stones back the way you found them, because animals live underneath.

Removing Dead Tissue

If a shell still holds a dead animal, deal with it before any cleaning. Heat water in a pot, take the pot off the heat, and soak the shells in it for a few minutes. Do not boil them on the flame, because hard heat cracks thin shells and dulls their colour.

Then use small tweezers to pull the flesh out. For spiral shells, work the inside out with a thin pin or a skewer. If residue sticks, soak the shell in water with salt (one spoon per litre) for several hours, then scrub with an old toothbrush.

Cleaning Sand and Salt

The main rule: no acid, no concentrated vinegar and no bleach on shells. Those dissolve the outer layer, kill the shine and change the colour. Warm water, salt and a soft brush are all you need.

• Soak the shells in warm water with a few drops of mild liquid soap for an hour.
• Scrub each shell with an old toothbrush in small circles, working the whorls and crevices.
• Rinse with ordinary water, not hot water.
• If a hard white calcareous patch remains, leave it. It is part of the shell and will not come off.

Drying: Shade, Never Direct Sun

Lay the shells on a mesh rack or paper towel in a dry, shaded spot for 24 to 72 hours depending on size. Do not dry them in direct sun: pale colours fade and thick shells can crack.

Storing and Displaying

• Never store shells in a sealed plastic bag. Moisture returns and mould follows.
• If you stack them, put a layer of cotton between each row so they do not scratch.
• Write the place and date on a card and keep it with the shell.
• Keep them out of direct sun and dust.
