Choosing and Setting Your Boat Anchor in Kuwait

An anchor is only as good as the seabed under it and the angle of the rode above it. Kuwait's inshore ground is mostly sand and soft mud, with rock and old coral patches scattered through it, so the anchor that bites in one spot can skate across another. The fix is to match the anchor to the bottom and set it properly.

Match the Anchor to the Seabed

• Danforth or fluke: flat, wide flukes that bite well in sand and mud. Good on open sand, weaker on rock or weed.
• Plough: a single curved blade that digs in and holds in sand and mud, and copes better with a change of tide direction.
• Bruce or claw: a one-piece scoop that sets fast and resets well as the boat swings, a sensible general choice for mixed ground.
• Grapnel: several prongs for rock and rubble where a fluke anchor cannot get a bite. Poor in soft mud.

Carry a main anchor suited to your usual ground and a second, different type as backup. Two anchors of the same kind fail in the same place.

Weight, Chain and Rope

Anchor weight follows boat length, windage and anchor design, so use the manufacturer's table for your hull rather than guessing. As a working rule, chain holds better and chafes less, while rope is lighter to handle and easier to retrieve by hand. Many small boats run a chain leader on a rope rode.

Scope is the ratio of rode length to the depth from bow roller to seabed. Around 5:1 for rope and 3:1 for chain is general guidance in calm conditions; add more in wind, swell or for an overnight stay. Setting the Anchor, Step by Step

• Approach slowly into the wind or current, stop over the spot, and note the depth.
• Stop the boat, then lower the anchor under control. Do not throw it, because a thrown anchor fouls its own rode.
• Pay out scope as the boat falls back, keeping light tension so the rode lies straight.
• Engage reverse at low power to dig the anchor in, then increase gradually until the rode comes taut.
• Take transits on two fixed points ashore, or bearings, and record the GPS position.
• Watch for two or three minutes. If the transits move, the anchor is dragging: retrieve it and reset.

When the Anchor Is Fouled

If the anchor will not come free, motor slowly forward past it with the rode near vertical, and let the change of angle pull the flukes out. Take a turn around a cleat and use the boat's weight gently, never by hand or winch with anyone near the line. If it stays stuck in rock, buoy the line, mark the position and return with a trip line or a diver.

Safety Around the Anchorage

Never anchor on reef or coral: the anchor breaks living structure and usually fouls too. Watch other boats swinging on a different radius, and keep clear of swimmers, dive flags and moorings. Leave enough distance that a wind shift does not put you on top of your neighbour, and stay aboard if the weather is building.

Good anchoring is a habit, not a gadget. Check the seabed, set with power, verify with transits, and recheck when the tide turns.
