Marine Chartplotter Settings for Kuwaiti Waters

A marine chartplotter is only as good as its settings. Around Kuwait the water is shallow, the traffic near the ports is heavy, and the bottom changes fast, so a few menus set correctly can save you a grounded hull. This guide covers the settings that actually matter — charts, units, depth and anchor alarms, and waypoints — for anyone launching from Shuaiba, Shuweikh or the marinas around Kuwait Bay.

Start with chart coverage for the Gulf

The most important setting is the chart itself. Make sure your unit is loaded with a chart that covers the Arabian Gulf and the Kuwaiti coast, and check the chart version before each season. A generic world basemap with no depth detail will not help you in Kuwait Bay or on the approach to the ports.

Set the zoom so contour lines are readable before you enter a shallow area.

Units and bearing: metric or feet?

Keep your units consistent across your devices, because mixing them is a common cause of bad fuel and distance maths.

• Depth unit — pick meters, since most local skippers and divers think in meters, and confirm the reading matches your transducer.
• Speed and distance — knots and nautical miles offshore, or km/h if that is what your crew reads; just never mix the two.
• Bearing reference — set true versus magnetic north to match your boat's compass; the difference shows up over long runs.
• Coordinate format — lock one format (decimal minutes is common) and write it down, so you can read your position over the radio.

Depth, shallow-water and anchor alarms

These are the settings that save boats. Set the shallow-depth alarm a little above your draft with a safety margin, and make sure the alarm is audible — not just a red line on screen. Turn on the repeated shallow alarm too, so you hear it while you are busy pulling a net.

An anchor alarm matters if you sleep aboard or go swimming. Set the swing radius to match the scope you have out, and let the unit beep the moment you drift outside it.

For known shallow or reefy ground, draw a safety contour around the area so the alarm triggers before you cross into it, not after.

Waypoints, routes and tracking

Save waypoints for the places that matter: the port entrance, your favourite fishing mark, a rendezvous point, and a sheltered spot to rest. Name them clearly, and record the depth at each one — that note alone can save you at night or in hazy light.

If you run the same trip often, build a route from those waypoints and review it before you leave, especially where it crosses harbour approaches.
