Cast Net Basics on the Kuwait Shore: Size, Mesh and the Right Throw

B7R Blog

Shore casting with a net is the cheapest way to put live bait in your bucket in Kuwait, and the fastest way to look like a beginner if you rush it. The net does not care how hard you throw. It cares whether the mesh matches the bait, whether the lead line opens cleanly, and whether you picked the right hour. This is the short version we would give a friend standing on the rocks at Shuwaikh at first light.

Match the net to the water

For most shore bait in Kuwait โ€” small mullet, baiadh, and shrimp in the shallows โ€” a 6 to 8 foot net with 3/8 inch mesh does the job. Bigger is not automatically better: a wide net on a narrow jetty catches rocks, not fish.

The throw, step by step

Coil. Gather the net in loose loops, half in each hand, and keep the lead line free of knots. Load. Hold the horn in your strong hand, lift one third of the net, and let the rest hang clean. Open. Turn your body and throw across your chest, not straight ahead โ€” the net opens because your hands separate, not because you force it. Follow through. Release at eye level and let the lead line hit the water first.

On the first throw, aim at open water you can actually see. Distance comes later; opening a full circle comes first.

Pick your hour: tide and wind

Bait gathers where moving water pushes food, so the first two hours of a rising tide and the last two of a falling tide beat dead slack water every time. A light onshore wind helps; strong wind folds the net back on itself and drags the lead line sideways. Check tide times for Shuwaikh and Shuaiba ports in B7R, along with the sea state, before you load the car.

Mistakes that cost you a net

Tangling comes from loose loops and a net full of wet sand โ€” shake it out and re-coil every few throws. Casting into rocks or onto the reef edge shreds the lead line and loses weights. Throwing too hard is the third one: you get a pancake, not a circle. The fourth is silent: skipping the rinse, so salt stiffens the mesh and rot starts in the folds.

Play it right with the rules

Follow Kuwaiti fishing regulations wherever you cast, and do not net juveniles or undersized fish โ€” a handful of small fish today means an empty shore next season. If you want a few for bait, take what you will use and release the rest quickly. A cast net is a bait tool, not a way to empty a lagoon. Rinse it in fresh water, hang it loose to dry out of direct sun, and it will last you several seasons.
