Best Fishing Times by Tide Stage

B7R Blog

Most anglers ask the wrong question: high tide or low tide? The stage matters less than the movement. A high tide with dead-still water is usually poor fishing. What matters is whether the water is moving right now, and how fast.

Why Fish Feed on Moving Water

When water moves, it carries food. Small crustaceans, larvae and plankton get lifted off the bottom and swept from weed and rock into new areas, so a fish holds in one spot and lets the current deliver dinner. Bait fish get pushed along too and stack up on the edges of the flow. Bigger fish wait behind structure โ€” rocks, pylons, jetty corners โ€” where currents collide or break, using the disturbance as cover. Moving water is moving food, and fish prefer to eat with less effort.

The Two Strong Windows

The best bite usually comes in the first part of the rising tide and the first part of the falling tide. That is when the water breaks its stillness, starts moving and wakes fish up. Even though the current is strongest mid-flow, the last hour before the turn often slows again as the water decelerates. This is a pattern, not a guarantee.

Slack Water: Use It, Don't Waste It

Slack water is the quietest stage, and many people write it off. Instead, use it: reposition toward your next spot before the water starts moving, change bait or gear, eat and rehydrate, or read the area again. Then you are already in place when the new flow begins, instead of arriving late. The B7R app gives tide times for Shuwaikh and Shuaiba ports, plus sea state and navigation tools, free on Google Play.

Why Tide Timing Shifts

Tide timing is not fixed. It follows the moon's orbit and the Earth's rotation, so the turn times shift, often by roughly 50 minutes each day at many locations. Yesterday's timing is not today's timing, so get the actual local turn for your spot from a reliable table on the day. Through the month the tide also swings between spring and neap phases: near new and full moons more water moves with more speed, while near the quarter moons the range is smaller. More movement can mean a shorter, sharper window; less movement may mean a longer, softer one. Wind and pressure change the timing too.

Tide Stage Is Not the Whole Answer

Do not treat the tide alone as the answer. Time of day matters, since dawn and dusk often fire up the bite, especially in summer. Season decides which species are around and how they behave. Combine tide stage with time of day, season and sea state, and use a fish guide, seasons and a catch log to see the full picture before you head out.

A Simple Trip Plan

Check tide times and sea state the night before. Aim to be on the spot before the water starts moving, not after. During the trip, note what worked: the window, the bait, the spot. Review your log after each trip to find your own patterns. The goal is not a guaranteed catch; it is better odds and a more efficient trip.
