Skilled fishermen say bait is half the game. You can sit for hours in a spot full of fish and catch nothing with poor bait — and the right fresh bait can produce even in places everyone has passed over. Here is your practical guide to bait in Kuwaiti waters.

The staple baits that work here

• Sardine (saboor): the number one choice for almost everything. Small pieces on the bottom catch shaeri and grouper; large pieces worked as a jig tempt kingfish.
• Fresh shrimp: the king of bottom baits — zubaidi love it. Rig it so it keeps an open, natural shape; a twisted presentation reads as dead and gets refused.
• Squid and cuttlefish: a tough bait that survives in the water and shrugs off small nibblers, and it takes kingfish, grouper, and big trevally.
• Sandworms and marine worms: available at tackle shops, excellent for small fish near the shore and for filling the cooler fast.

Live bait versus cut bait

Predators like kingfish prefer movement. If you can catch a live sardine — with a small cast net or a sabiki rig — hook it and let it swim; the motion drives predators crazy. When live bait is not available, a piece of sardine jigged slowly mimics the same movement. On the bottom, a shrimp on the hook moves with the current and out-fishes a heavy, motionless chunk.

Keeping bait fresh in the heat

• A cooler with ice from the moment you buy — never leave bait in the sun or in the car boot.
• Rinse bait in seawater before storing, and poke holes in the bag so meltwater drains.
• Wrap sardines in wet newspaper over the ice to make them last longer.
• Cut only what you need for the session; return the rest to the cooler instead of leaving it in the sun.

The right bait for Kuwait's famous fish

• Kingfish (kanad): whole sardine, squid, or live bait — it prefers fast movement.
• Grouper (hamour): large sardine chunks resting on the bottom near reefs and ledges.
• Shaeri: shrimp or cut sardine on a sandy bottom.
