Kuwait's public beaches are shared space, and a few simple habits keep them pleasant for everyone. Most trouble on the sand comes from visitors who did not know the local custom.
Rules change between beaches and seasons. Always confirm current restrictions and opening hours with the relevant local authority before you go.
Not every public beach in Kuwait has the same atmosphere. Some are family beaches where families and children dominate; others are busier mixed areas with jet skis, music and crowds.
Pick the one that suits your group. With children, choose a stretch away from jet-ski launch points and water-sports zones, and keep them in shallow, calmer water.
Some beaches close at night; some have lifeguards and some have none. Confirm details locally rather than trusting a post from last summer.
On public beaches, modest swimwear is the norm: long swim shorts for men, modest or full-coverage swimwear for women. On the walkway and in cafes, people cover up more.
Respect other people's space: do not sit a metre from a family's spot, do not shout, and never photograph people without asking. Women and children especially should be left alone.
Sunbathing that is unremarkable on a European beach may draw complaints here. Read the room.
Leave the spot better than you found it.
Jet-ski lanes and swimming areas are kept separate, and staying in your own zone protects everyone. Never ride fast near swimmers, and keep clear of buoys and fishing nets.
Do not launch a boat or jet ski from a swimming beach. Use the designated boat ramp, and never park on it โ it is the access point for fishermen, other boaters and emergency services. A net that is not yours can ruin a fisherman's day.
Kite surfers should stay at the windward end of the beach, clear of families and swimmers.
Camping on the beach is a great Kuwaiti tradition, but it has boundaries. Do not pitch your tent next to private chalets or enter privately owned land without permission.
Keep music at a volume only your own group can hear; large speakers at night disturb neighbouring camps and nearby houses. Dogs should be on a lead and never left loose.
Wind and tide change fast at night. Check the sea state before you sleep, and sleep well back from the waterline.
Summer swimming in Kuwait needs care. Do not swim straight after hours in the sun, drink water before you feel thirsty, and protect your feet from hot sand.
Keep small children within arm's reach, avoid strong currents, and leave the water if the wind picks up or the colour changes.
