Autumn Kingfish: Getting Ready

B7R Blog

Kingfish season in Kuwait does not open on a fixed date. The sea loses its summer heat through October, bait fish bunch up, and the kanaad follow them in. The good trips are the ones prepared a week early, not the ones thrown together the night before.

What Changes in the Water

The sea cools from the surface down, so the first weeks are patchy. One trip reads autumn, the next still feels like August. Bait fish group and shift, and where the bait sits is where kingfish patrol.

Read the surface before you fish it. Birds working one patch, small fish spraying, or a boil repeating along the same line justify a slow pass before you commit the trip to that mark.

Tackle: The Dry-Land Check

Do this at home, in daylight, with nothing waiting on the tide. A cracked guide or a sticky drag found on the water costs you the best hour of the day.

Boat, Fuel and Safety Gear

Top the fuel, start the engine before the trip rather than at the ramp, and charge the battery. Count the safety gear out loud: life jackets for everyone aboard, a first aid kit, water, and a charged phone in a waterproof pouch with the emergency button within reach.

An autumn morning can look flat and still be wrong further out.

Timing: Tide and First Light

Check tide times for Shuwaikh and Shuaiba, then open the seasons and fish guide in the B7R app to see where the calendar sits. Plan around the tide instead of hoping to fit it in.

Early morning is the easy call: cooler air, usually less wind, and the first hour of light shows the most surface activity. A tide that is actually running beats a textbook tide gone slack.

Trolling and Drifting

Trolling covers water and finds fish; drifting presents a bait in one small area. Trolling suits a search day with calm water and a straight line; a drift suits a mark you trust, especially when wind and current push you along it.

Keep speed and heading steady on a troll; constant changes make the lure swim wrong. On a drift, watch your line angle to see whether you move with the tide or across it.

Ice, the Log, and Wind

Bleed the fish straight away and get it into a seawater and ice slurry, not dry ice in a box. Then log the trip: date, tide stage, clarity, wind, what the fish took. Patterns only show across a season, and the catch log in the B7R app keeps them in one place.

Autumn wind is rarely steady. A shamal can build in an hour, and a shift from offshore to onshore turns a comfortable drift into a steep, wet chop. Pick your turnaround point before the first line goes out.

None of this guarantees fish. It removes the reasons a good day goes wrong. Download it free on Google Play, check the tide and forecast the night before, and keep the log: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.q8dm.b7r
